Royal Chant version 2.0

RC-BoysONCouch2

Back in 2015 I recorded and mixed a bunch of tracks for Royal Chant LP – The War Cry of Failure.

After experimenting with studios up the coast closer to their home in Port Macquarie, the lads were back in Sydney just before the end of 2017 to record a new record at Music Feeds Studio ( Megaphon ) for release later in 2018. The drummer has changed, the bass player has changed, but the vibe is still hilarious, sardonic and loose.

Production wise we had to move quickly; an LP was hoped to be recorded in 4 days! From an engineering and production point of view, I really enjoyed using Music Feeds consoles busses. To aid moving quickly we set up multiple mics on cabinets / instruments and were able to buss to Protools the desired mic / DI combination that was perfect for each track. In my head were older engineers words of “commit during tracking.”

Further, I enjoyed approaching the drums more minimally that I sometimes do. We employed a Glynn Johns techniques, with a touch of support mics and also used a Gabriel Roth / Daptone technique of a one mic drum sound (between kick and snare) the mic used in this case was the Beyerdynamic m380 which worked perfectly for a crunchy lo-fi brilliance.

Below are a bunch of pictures from the session, and below that the previous record Royal Chant and I did together back in 2015.
