On The Stoop

Mid Jan it was back to work and we kicked off the year with 3 days locked in Music Feeds Studio with On The Stoop.

On The Stoop remind me of a mature (not too mature) Mr Bungle. This particular record we were working on was combining elements such as New Orleans Jazz, Spaghetti Western, Surf Rock, Punk, Mariachi and beyond.

For all those engineer nerds; a couple of stand out signal paths from the session come to mind, firstly, I’ve been loving the warmth that AT 4081 ribbons achieve on Rack and Floor toms. They are warm, gooey in a traditional ribbon fashion yet have a good modern ribbon top frequency response enabling them to cut through a mix.

Secondly, I’m enjoying the TLM107 on outside kick duties of late. It’s high SPL and it great tone make it thick, mid forward and knocking in a Neumann sort of a fashion. In this case we created a kick tunnel with some heavy blankets so that the outer kick and little bleed form the rest of the kit.

The mix is now off to master Bob Scott.
